Ladies here's another reason to hold off on that second burger and it has more to do with developing breast cancer than just gaining weight. Researchers from Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School say that eating red meat twice a day could double the chances of women developing breast cancer.
In an article on Web MD, Red Meat May Up Breast Cancer Risk, researcher Eunyoung Cho, ScD, says 'It may be that diet in early adulthood has a stronger impact on [breast
cancer] risk than diet later in life. But we can't say that from this study.'
That's because the women in the study who consumed more than one-and-a-half servings a day were found to be 97% more at risk of developing the most common hormones linked to breast cancer, compared to those women who ate less red meat.
So far the latest findings apply to premenopausal women but researchers say its likely the results will be the same as women get older. The ongoing study will track the participants as they age to confirm this.
And as for your waistline, these findings do not take away from what some say is a constant factor in developing breast cancer.
'Being overweight is strongly associated with breast cancer risk. This has been shown in study after study,' says American Cancer Society nutritional epidemiologist Marji McCullough, ScD, RD.
